COVID-19 Resources

Individual health workers are at the forefront of the response to COVID-19 and under almost unprecedented strain. The pandemic is passing from one continent to the other, affecting all in turn. This document contains information and resources designed to support NHS Scotland Global Citizenship’s global health community.

Data Sources

The Scottish Public Health Observatory (ScotPHO) brings together a wide variety of high quality data, profiles and reports on the health of Scotland’s population.

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an independent population health research centre at UW Medicine, part of the University of Washington, that provides rigorous and comparable measurement of the world’s most important health problems.

Gapminder is an independent Swedish foundation which produces free teaching resources making the world understandable based on reliable statistics.

Guidance On Management Of Medical Devices And Equipment In Scotland Healthcare And Social Services Version 1 (NHS Scotland, 2024) provides guidance for the donation of suitable surplus equipment through NHS Scotland Global Citizenship Programme.

Medical device donations: considerations for solicitation and provision provided by the World Health Organisation.

Medical Equipment Donations provides on safe donation on medical equipment to low-and-middle- income countries (LMICs) they need to deliver quality care. The findings of the review have informed the development of the 10 Step Guide poster and 10 Step guide checklist.

HealthLink360 travel clinic is a registered charity which provides  risk assessments, country specific advice on recommended vaccinations, anti-malarials and particular health risks. They are a Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre

The Malawian Scottish Partnership – based in Lilongwe, Malawi.

The Scotland Malawi Partnership (SMP) is the national civil society network coordinating, supporting and representing the people-to-people links between Scotland and Malawi. The paper from the University of Edinburgh, Valuing the links between Scotland and Malawi provides useful further information.

NHS Scotland Global Citizenship Framework

The NHS Scotland Global Citizenship Framework sets out ten Principles which underpin the NHS Scotland Global Citizenship Programme and the direction for global citizenship in NHS Scotland.

These Principles detail “what good looks like” and support NHS staff and Health Boards to ensure the global health work they undertake with partners is ethical, sustainable and effective.

The Framework makes clear NHS Scotland’s ongoing commitment to global citizenship, for the benefit of patients, health workers and the health service both here in Scotland, and beyond.

Policy Coherence for Development

An open, editable wiki resource for individuals and organisations interested in improving policy coherence in Scotland. The wiki was created by Scotland’s International Development Alliance, with initial support from Oxfam Scotland, SCIAF, Christian Aid Scotland, SCVO and Tearfund Scotland.

Scottish International Development Alliance (SIDA)

The Scottish International Development Alliance provides support to people and organizations in Scotland involved in international development. The organization provide a range of resources including education and training as well as access to a very comprehensive funding database.

Sustainability Action

Sustainability Action is used to support and promote staff behaviour change activities that contribute to delivering sustainability across all parts of the NHS.

The NHS Scotland climate emergency and sustainability strategy: 2022-2026 document sets out plans for NHS Scotland to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and impact on the environment, adapt to climate change and to better contribute to the United Nation sustainable development goals. It has been developed by the Scottish Government and NHS Scotland Assure.

NHS Scotland Global Citizenship Webinar on Environmental Sustainability

This online webinar was on environmental sustainability in the context of global health work and discussed the challenges of balancing planetary health considerations with the inevitable carbon footprint of an international health partnership. Dr Sarah Chibane presented her work on the Carbon footprint of travel for global health partnerships.
